$20 for 24 MHz to 1.7 GHz SDR

Could this be used for receiving the Outernet signal?

It works on the Pi

Mine is coming in the mail today but won’t be able to test until Monday as I forgot the adapter for dish to dongle. I’ll report back with my findings next week.

Edit: seems I got a different one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C37AZXK/

I’m not the hardware guy so I’m not sure if you can use RTL-SDR for DVB-S reception as is. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard something about needing to convert the signal, and also encode it differently. Having said that, I’ve been asked to order one of those, so I’m pretty sure we’ll start broadcasting something usable in near future (possibly SW), followed by howtos and scripts.

Do not buy. The RTL2832U is DVB-T. It does not allow the required DVB-S. On the plus side, I’ve got an FM receiver…

Edit: I’m still doing research…
