Installing Outernet under VM VirtualBox - Mac OS X

Outernet Virtual Machine up and running under Mac Os X.

Specs:

  • MacBook usb-c
  • 10.11.6

However I had to install the “VirtualBox 5.1.6 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack” to get USB 2.0 and 3.0 running.

What would you suggest we change in these instructions:

For running OuternetInABox on macOS, you will first need to download and install
Virtualbox and VirtualBox Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack from here:

Downloads – Oracle VM VirtualBox

Then download the Outernet.ova (virtual appliance) from this directory.

Once downloaded, just double-click the .ova file whereever downloaded, and Virtualbox will open to import it.

After import, select the Outernet vm in virtualbox, and click start.

by default files go in /tmp/Outernet folder. You can change this in the VM settings.

Hi Syed,

The information is all there in the instructions.

But just to make it even more clear for all users, ie that 2 separate pieces of software are requested:

Instead of

  • “you will first need to download and install
Virtualbox and VirtualBox Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack”

Something like this might be better

  • “you will first need to download and install both these 2 files
    (1) Virtualbox and (2) VirtualBox Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack”

I have been able to get the Mac VM to work, but (at least for in the Americas) I had to copy some files around, to get the decoder on to the right frequency (1539 Mhz).

To do this, each time I boot, I copy /mnt/hostfs/Outernet/Satellites.Available/AMERICAS.txt to this directory:

/mnt/hostfs/Outernet/Satellites.Selected.

Then restart the client in the default home directory (/home/tc/outernet.sh)

I haven’t looked at making this static, as I will soon migrate to a Rasp Pi 3…
