Need Help... A little confused.... DIY Kit

ok so i set up my HDStar receiver (bought off outernet shop), My raspberry pi2 with outernet image… have it wired up to the Free View sat dish i already had up, which receives free view at 100% signal no prob… but im not getting a lock or any bitrate/download…

Where i am, I am in Ireland on the easy coast, close the north side of Dublin, my house is on top of a Hill, my dish is pointing east and receiving Free Sat TV perfect, as far as i know it is a universal LND, but if i connect with the C type i get a boost in strength, so i have it set at that for now HotBird 13E seems to be the best sat to connect to based on my map, i have tryed manually configuring based on wiki to find a connection, this is the best as fast i can see now… (will attach image bellow)

i noticed that when i did the initial setup it never asked me to set the time and date like in the Receiver DIY kit and so i noticed in the log file it shows the time and date as 1970-01-01 00:31:30 (i will also add a log below)

anyway the issue im having is im getting
Signal = 80
Quality = 0.45
Bitrate = 0
NO LOCK - also the down arrow and signal bar is flashing red…

Picture of Dashboard HERE (imgur)

can anyone figure this out or help me at all … am i using wrong settings, or what, i have a clear line of sign from dish im at tallest point in my area… there is nothing else to interfere with my connection… Thanks in Advanced people

HDStar is known to show erroneous signal strength and SNR readings when it doesn’t have a proper coax connection, so I’d start by checking that first.

Checked that seems to be in as far as it possibly can

You mentioned a C-type. Is that as in ‘C-type connector’? If so, could you try F connector?

im using the F type Connector now, the C type is very rarely used in Ireland from what i know, what i was saying is in the LNB type in the settings i used the C Band option and found it to give more signal strength

C-band option will only give you a wrong transponder.

In the part of the code where L-band frequency is determined, the C-band offset is used instead of one of the appropriate offsets for the Ku-band, so end up with wrong L-band frequency. Any ‘boost’ you are seeing is probably associated with some other transponder that happens to be at that frequency, but you are still not able to get a lock because other parameters are wrong.

Right ok that makes sense, is there any chance you know what band and frequency i need to be one ??

The LNB selector has to be set to Universal, and the selector that says “Custom” should be set to Hotbird 13 (if that’s the bird you are trying to use). Like this:

This is what im getting

LNB Universal on all

Hotbird 13
Signal = 32
quality = 0
Bitrate = 0

Intelsat 20 (dosnt make sense as map says its out of range)
Signal = 58
Quality = 0
Bitreate = 0

Could it be the Time and Date setting, if so how do i even change it ???
Current in logs [1970-01-01 01:28:44 (+0000)]

Is your dish pointed at any of those two birds?

yeah toward Hotbird 13 to the best i can, i dont have a Sat gage to know if its spot on did the best with my phone app… it happens to be in the same direction in which i receive TV from (TV is not connected at the same time as outernet)

How long is the coax between LNB and HDStar?

id say less then 20 meters

That is weird. HDStar isn’t the best tuner, but with that distance, it should have a pretty usable reception.

Try this: unscrew and slowly wiggle the F connector in circular motion and see if it locks at some point. If it does, then you’re probably having the same issue some of us did, which is that the inner diameter of the tuner port is too large for the connector you have. In that case, you can bend the tip of the connector ever so slightly in attempt to make better contact.

tryed that there now … even striped and put a new head on the cable … would it help in anyway to install an older version of the outernet raspi2 image and see can get connected ???

messing around in the tunner settings, set as DVBS2, 32 APSK im getting a signal of 92 and a quality of 1.0… but still no bitrate or connection …

It seems your cable is too lengthy. I’m using 20 ft cable with my setup.

Also check reception of the other tv channels for the particular frequency with your FTA receiver. Also you can connect your hdstar with your computer and watch satellite tv channels.

Dean, I live in Germany and during my initial setup I hooked the coax from the dish to a tv-satellite receiver and aligned it to the Hotbird. When I got reception, I could see the “Outernet” indicated under the “Radio-List” of the receiver. This was to confirm the dish-setup. After that I hooked the Pi and the HD-Star up. And of course I selected the Universal-LNB and Hotbird 13E in the setup.
And voilà, the setup-tuner page in Librarian shows: SIGNAL 53, QUALITY 0.96 and BITRATE 90K. Btw: the coax is a cheap one, about 20m long.
You should see it online: http://obereip.selfhost.de

Hope that helps

Hi Wolfgang - - I’m intrigued by your ability to connect your ORxPi to an internet web site to view it. I presume you have your Pi connected to your router, and then (thru a Magic application) to an internet view-able site.

I do the same thing with a remote access program called Team-Viewer, but your approach is much more elegant. Could you explain it? Thanks, Ken in Annapolis, Maryland

@kenbarbi you can achieve that with port-forwarding, with a reverse proxy on a server or one of the DDNS services that allow you to map a domain name to your router’s public IP (e.g., NoIP).

Hi kenbarbi,

like Branko said:

that was absolutely not magic: I opened a free account at a dynamic dns provider, since i do not have assigned a static ip by my provider. They offer a free subdomain (obereip.selfhost.de). Have a look at selfhost.de!
My router (german brand fritz!box 7490) offers port forwarding and supports the dyndns. Should be much easier if you have a fixed ip by your provider!
The outernet running on the raspberry pi gets its local network ip via the lan-port from the router and the web interface can of course be reached via the internal private ip. Like this I do not have to change to the “Outernet-Wifi” to view the new content.

Hope that helps

Wolfgang
