Skylark V1.0 - new Outernet Firmware!

Nice… I have managed just above 10db in the 25E bird from my latitude of 51Degrees North, with the patch antenna., which I though was impressive… It is hovering around 10db right now

@neil

I have since had to move my setup from where it was (until i get my small solar power system finished) so my average right now is about 8db. If you are maintaining 10db average that is amazing!

I can’t edit a custom beam. Due to frequency drift of my sdr, I need to change the frequency. I tried modifying /etc/rxos_config.json and /mnt/conf/etc/rxos_config.json with no luck.
Nothing changed realtime and when rebooted, the values where as from factory settings. Any advice? Thanks!

Try my arrangement

Water proofed under a polyethylene food container with no apparent signal loss. Ken

i doubt editing the freq will work.

which sdr are you using? for a signal this narrow, high frequency stability is a must.

in anycase, editing /mnt/conf/etc/rxos_config.json should work, but not in real time. you will need to restart the tuner service, or reboot. /mnt/conf/etc/rxos_config.json changes should stick across reboots. /etc/rxos_config.json won’t.

good luck!

Issue with Weather APP:

It is Jan 6 here and a shot of my current weather app screen. Notice the date.

So it is not showing today’s data. So I check the weather folders and find the following.

Oh boy, no data in the list for the 6th… Let me check current.

Yep there is data there, but if it really is for today why is the weather app showing the data for the 4th still, and the forward and back one day buttons will only fail. Humm. What about the grib2 file directory?

Well there is an issue? Why are these files not getting unpacked and put away?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Similar issue with weather…only I can’t pull any data for any days to the Globe even though several folders have been populated. Ha, I thought it was user error but feel somewhat better now that I see others having problems.

“current” is simply a copy of the data file that contains the “000” cycle data - in your case, its a copy of the data that for 2017-01-05. So thats correct.

Why is your display showing 2017-01-04? cause the stamps on the filesystem are UTC, but your local time is the time being displayed in the app. Also note that the data runs about 24 hours behind from NOAA as its “actual reported data”.

For the future dates, yes, seems your receiver didn’t receiver the data for 6th. Hence why clicking “>>” shows you “no data”. But try clicking it again (to go to the 7th). “current” shows real data ,while all future ones show “predictions”.

The Weather/grib2/ files are already processed ones. They are stored there after processing so that external viewers can access them if needed. The files originally appear in grib2 folder at the root of downloads. That should be empty as after processing the files are removed from there.

how long as your receiver been up? Have you received the oscar data yet? Atleast one set of oscar should download before the globe can start working.

The date will not click past the 6th. No Data each time.

My uptime is currently 1Day 14+ hours.

I don’t see any Oscar file. But I may just be looking in the wrong place.

it should be in Weather/data

as your globe is showing some actual data, you must’v already received a set. coopooc probably hasn’t yet.

also, can you show me the list of files in the gfs.2017010500 and gfs.2017010600 directories?

Here are the directories.

5th

6th is blank.

Here just for grins is my current tuner status.

ok. you have received very few data files yet. just wait another day or so. none of the weather sets are complete.

Okay, Thanks for looking at this.

I suddenly lost signal from the 25E bird :frowning:
It is raining here, I changed nothing and I have the same as I would if I disconnected the antenna just jumping around on random SNR numbers …
I have just spent the last hour out in the rain moving the antenna around, to no avail… I didn’t think that thick cloud would block it essentially 100% :frowning:
I am about to try the SDR in the PC & see what I can see from the antenna.
(Edit)
testing it fro the PC I can see almost no signal, so the SNR was right :frowning: turning off the Bias-T made all signals go away, but I guess the FET could be dead in the LNA… turning it back on I could JUST see the Aero signals which were very string before .

I attached a different antenna and looked at a few UHF signals on the SDR and it was working
so I took the coax cable of of the equation and put the SDR, the CHIP and the battery all in the box ( as it was before I moved the sdr etc. inside , and put the whole thing outside a spot I know has good signal and I can JUST get 3db SNR out of it :frowning:
It has lock … mostly…
Either the LNA is crook, the SDR itself has gone deaf, the patch antenna has broken ( I checked the cable) or the the whole thing doesn’t like thick cloud :frowning: Not that it was only this morning I was boasting about 10db SNR , so somthing is really wrong…
bummer
Just to top it off , I received a £28 ($35) bill from Fedex today for import duty (and their £12 ($15) “collection fee” ) on top of the £105 ($130) I paid for the DIY kit with postage… The day just gets better…
:frowning:

Hi, I received the kit this afternoon and work great.
I just flash Skylark and it is good even if the light after the update ROM did not flash, just off.

I remove the jumper (FEL) and boot it with the antenna and here is the results:

My patch antenna is inside, at a window… Need a box for outside soon…

All go to lunch!

In the book Satellite Communications for the non Specialist By Mark R. Chartrand it is noted that:

Rain attenuation is highly dependent on the frequency used. At 4GHz (C Band) clear sky attenuation is .4db, at a rain rate of 1cm/Hr this barely goes up to .5db. And this effect becomes less at lower frequencies. Where at L band (1.5GHz where we are playing) the effect of rain fading is negligible.

If your SNR went from 10 down to 3 it likely is not directly related to rain fade of the signal.

Now moisture in your line could be a whole different beast.

Good luck!

OK, that was a good question… If i get right next to the CHIP it connects fine.
What’s up with that?

I also have this problem except I have data through the 9th but the weather app doesn’t display anything past the 5th, just server down at the top left. I will let it run over night and see if it starts working again, I may have missed some files this morning when my chip turned off for no apparent reason.
